Capital and main harbor center of Elba, are found on the northeastern coast on a cape that delimits the bay to north.
Portoferraio is between the more oldest communities of the island, its origins goes back to the from Ligurian ones, the Etruscan and the Greeks before becoming Roman colony with the name of Fabricia.
Portoferraio, in the aspect that still today we can admire, came built up for will of Cosimo I dei Medici, after renamed it Cosmopoli, began in the 1548 great works of fortification.
